Proverbs 3

This chapter continues where the previous one left off, extolling the virtues of wisdom. They are the following:

1) Wisdom will prolong your life (from verse 2).
2) It will bring you prosperity (also from verse 2).
3) If your heart is led by love and faithfulness, you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man (from verse 4). I've always liked this verse, the idea that working to present yourself as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable in God's sight (from Romans 12:1), has also the effect of causing men to respect you. It's an optimistic perspective, that acting out of love will be understood as compassion even amongst fallen man. So then real respect is had through loving.
4) If you acknowledge God in all that you do, he will direct your path (from verse 6).
5) Humility, fear of the Lord, and a turning away from evil is the key to healthy living (from verses 7 and 8).
6) Live with the recognition that you are but a steward of God's resources, and he will provide for you more than you could desire (from verses 9 and 10).
7) Wisdom holds long life, riches, and honor in her hands (from verse 16).
8) Wisdom makes life pleasing and peaceful (from verse 17).
9) Sound judgment and discernment will keep you safe and allow you to rest easy at night (from verses 21-24).
10) Finally, wisdom brings honor (from verse 35).

In addition to these benefits of wisdom, there are some other interesting take aways from this chapter:

1) God disciplines those he loves as a father disciplines his son (from verses 11 and 12). Therefore, it is for our own benefit that we are sometimes chastised. God takes no pleasure in our suffering, but he allows it to happen when we have strayed from the straight and narrow in order that we should come back, and in the process gain wisdom.
2) Verses 19 and 20 are an illustration of the power of wisdom. By wisdom, God laid the foundations of the earth, set the heavens in place, divided the deeps, and let the clouds drop their dew. This makes me wonder though what wisdom is for an omniscient God. Any ideas?
3) Do not withhold good from those who deserve it. I often am harsh, withholding compassion, from those who I know love me. I take them for granted far too often, and that is clearly not right (from verse 27).
4) Do not envy a violent man. So often in my life I have admired the man who solved his problems with his fists. It seems such a show of strength, of boldness against injustice. Here, however, it is stated clearly that God sees the violent man's ways as perverse (from verses 31 and 32).
